At diagnosis, more than a third of NSCLC patients have Stage III disease.

Multimodality treatment

is necessary in this group of patients:

Surgical resection or radiotherapy alone are associated

with poor

outcome (10% 5-year survival)

Micrometastatic disease

is often present when N2 nodes are involved;

the majority of patients eventually relapse and

two-thirds

of the relapses

are systemic
